It's a worldwide phenomenon that children attend schools to receive formal education. Parents in their pursuit to provide best of classroom education to their children often neglect the extra knowledge that their children require in their growing years. It is beyond the scope of the conventional education system to provide books & resources to the children for gaining the much important insights about the world we live in, our rich cultural heritage and our history.

Parents must help their children by guiding them in the right direction and by bringing them the resources to gain this extra knowledge. When a child attempts to acquire this knowledge by reading books, the child also cultivates a habit of reading.

Reading has been source of knowledge for ages and it prepares children to face the world and life ahead.

As parents move from Bengal to Delhi or Gujarat to Mumbai, books published in their native states or in their mother tongue are often left behind. In metros, it may be difficult, if not impossible, for parents to find children books from their cultures and in their mother tongue. Parents have little access to the books and stories from their youth to pass on to the next generation. Many children may grow up without knowledge of their family's heritage and first language.

A fundamental principle of Meri Library is that children and their families deserve to have access to the books of their culture, as well as the majority culture, history, heritage, world they live in and much more regardless of where they live. According to a paper published in 2005 by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in preparation for the second meeting on the World Summit on the Information Society, "Denial to access to information in one's mother tongue is equivalent to a denial of a human right." The report also concludes, "In terms of pedagogy, how do children learn best? In their mother tongue".

Meri Library is one such endeavour where children have access to books & resources at their doorstep. The understanding of life and knowledge that children acquire from these resources is beyond the scope of formal education. This is a gift that every parent should give to their children, the precious gift that is surely going to have a far reaching effect on their life.

Meri Librarys goal is to build a collection of books that represents all the aspects of life that a child must learn to prepare for the future. Ultimately, Meri Library also aspires to have different cultures and language represented so that every child can know and appreciate the riches of their culture.
