The State of West Bengal is famous for its poets, writers and artists. The folk tales of the State collectively belong to undivided Bengal, part of which is now Bangladesh. These tales have been divided into four genres; rupakatha (stories about love and adventure and the victory of good over evil); upakatha (about animals and birds and their relationship with human beings); bratakatha (about rituals and brata); and rasakatha (comprising stories of humour and entertainment). The 16 stories put together enable readers to know about this culturally rich State and its people.
